A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin by removing its outermost layer. Chemical peels induce controlled injury to the skin by breaking down the top layer or layers of skin to help diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles, to improve texture and tone as well as to reduce pigmentation to the skin caused by aging, sun damage and melasma.
Chemical peels also help treat acne and help to minimize the appearance of scarring caused by acne by reducing oil on the skin as well as by treating the bacteria that cause acne.
Very Superficial Peels – penetrate only to the stratum corneum.
Superficial Peels – penetrate to any depth within the epidermis.
Medium Depth Peels – penetrate thru the dermal/epidermal function to the papillary dermis.
Deep Peels – penetrate tot he level of the reticular dermis.
Chemical peels are classified based on their depth of penetration from very superficial peels to deep peels. The depth of penetration is based on the type of chemical used to peel the skin as well as the pH of the chemical and it’s concentration and amount of time it is applied to the skin.
Chemical peels can be used as a stand alone treatment to help refresh and nourish the skin or they can be used in series to address specific conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne and scarring caused by acne. Chemical peels can also be used in conjunction with laser treatments, microneedling, facials and other aesthetic procedures to help correct and expedite results. By exfoliating the outermost layer of skin with a chemical peel, at home skin care products and in office treatments are more effective. Consistent use of peels on even just a quarterly basis can aid in anti-aging.
